Military Brat March on Washington
Brats Without Borders is currently planning a March on Washington as part of Operation Military
Brat, our educational outreach program to raise the awareness of the challenges facing military brats of all ages, acknowledge their sacrifices, and improve the quality of their lives. If you're interested in participating
or supporting our efforts, please fill out the form below, check the "Yes, I would like to
participate in the "Military Brat March on Washington" checkbox. Thanks!
Vietnam-Iraq Brats Mentor Program
Brats Without Borders is currently looking for Vietnam BRATS interested in participating in a mentoring program
with Iraq BRATS (meaning American brats whose parent(s) fought in Vietnam or the current Iraq War). (Must be 18 or over
to participate.) If you're interested, please fill out the form below, check the "Yes, I am
a brat or a third culture kid" checkbox, and in the box below that, specify the type of brat or TCK you are,
then add "Vietnam (or Iraq) Brat - Mentor Program." Thanks!
"Race & the TCK" Research Project
Apparently, a large percentage of President Obama's staff and counsel are TCKs. So is President Obama.
Is that a coincidence? How does living outside your country of origin and being exposed to a variety of
different cultures and religions affect children? Twenty years before the Civil Rights movement,
black and white children were dancing together at the "teen club" on military bases. Children from
foreign service, missionary, NGO, and internationally-mobile corporate families were playing with African,
Asian, and Middle Eastern children. What happens when these brats and TCKs grow up? Are they different
from more rooted children? What are their strengths? What are their weaknesses? Can they teach us
anything about what it takes to "just get along?" This is the subject BRATS Writer-Director Donna Musil
was originally interested in back in 1998, before the BRATS film blossomed into a larger study of the
"brats" subculture. Unfortunately, in 1998, no one was interested in helping fund a study of brats and race -
not The Carter Center, not President Clinton's Initiative on Race, not the SCLC. Perhaps things have changed
in ten years - perhaps not. We're going to do it anyway! If you're interested in participating in this
research project, please fill out the form below.
"Trauma & the TCK" Research Project
Because of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, there's been a lot of attention paid to PTSD or
posttraumatic stress disorder with regard to soldiers. But what about the children? Does a life filled
with multiple moves, parental absence, and direct and indirect exposure to terror and violence cause or
predispose brats and TCKs to PTSD, as well? Are children as resilient as people claim, or are they just
good at putting up a front? Is there anything we can do to ameliorate the effects of this exposure?
If you're interested in participating in this research project, please fill out the form below.
"Military Brat Abuse" Research Project
Recently, two teenage girls were found in an Army barracks in Washington State - one was dead, the other
injured. While researching the effects of growing up military for the BRATS film, we encountered quite
a few stories about teenager/GI confrontations/abuse. This is to be expected. Military bases have
disproportionate numbers of young men, who live and come in disproportionate contact with military teenagers.
Young men in general disproportionately commit these types of crimes. Is this something that needs to be
addressed? How can we protect military children from this type of increased risk? If you're interested
in participating in this research project, please fill out the form below.
